We have come a long way from the old saying, An apple a day, keeps the doctor away. Health is on everyone’s mind from that of the average person to the first family in the White House. The options for getting healthy are endless, as are the lengths to which we will go to get there. So what exactly do we do to get healthy and how do we stay there
Most watched as the first family planted the first vegetable garden at the White House. This is probably the best way to make sure your family is getting only the best fruits and vegetables. We want to make sure we are not ingesting poisonous pesticides and harmful fertilizers.
Not everyone has a green thumb so, another option is the local farmers market where you can pick up the fresh, home grown harvest of those in the local community. If you live in a big city, there are several Whole Foods stores popping up across the country offering only the best of the 5 food groups. Though, a healthy diet isn’t the only thing we need to do to maintain a healthy happy body, it is an excellent place to start.
Just about everyone has tuned in to watch shows like Biggest Loser or Celebrity Fit Club. It isn’t watching them change their eating habits, although it is fun to watch them squirm at the temptations that we want to see. We love to watch them suffer through rigorous exercise regimens. Then, at the end of the episode, we gasp at the amazing weight loss during one week’s time. It is truly inspirational. So, you know what you have to do.
Peel yourself up off the couch and start moving. No, it isn’t easy and sometimes not much fun either. Once you get into a good routine and start feeling great, you will be addicted to health and fitness. Some prefer the gym, the yoga or palates studio or a family run or hike through the park. Start slow or throw yourself into it. Although, the eating healthy and exercise are obvious steps to getting healthy, there is an equally important step that gets much less attention.
Getting completely healthy includes thinking healthy thoughts. Once out of shape with poor eating habits, negative thoughts are guaranteed. Positive thoughts play a key role in getting and staying healthy. Yes, once eating healthy and exercising, mental health will start to come naturally.
However, you have to exercise the brain as well. Make it a rule in your household of saying only positive things to and about each other. Catch yourself whenever a nasty thought starts to creep in and change it to something positive. Soon you will see your entire outlook on the world changing.
All of these things will come together to not only keep you and your family looking good but it will strengthen your immune system and keep you feeling good. By making some simple changes and keeping it fun, you will soon start to notice a healthier, happier you.
