Choosing a Healthy Diet Plan

When choosing to change your eating habits or to lose weight, make sure you follow a healthy diet plan that has been researched and thought out by experts in the field of nutrition. A good place to turn for healthy diet options is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has provided the public with two main healthy diet plans that can help you obtain healthy eating habits, lose weight, or just be a healthier person.

The CDC focuses on two different eating plans My Pyramid Plan and DASH, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. Both of these eating plans are healthy and are focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low fat foods. These plans also both include lean meats, beans, eggs, and nuts, and let you choose the amount of calories you eat in a day.

My Pyramid Plan was developed by The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Guide and helps you create meal plans specific to your individual needs and give you guidelines according to your gender, age, height, weight, and activity level.

DASH was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to learn if certain nutrients in foods can help reduce high blood pressure. And while this plan was developed to help people who need to lower their blood pressure, it can still benefit anyone who chooses to follow its guidelines.

Both the DASH and My Pyramid Plan have additional guidelines for foods that contain added sugar or fat. This means that you don’t have to give up your favorite foods, you just need to eat them in moderation and combine them as a part of your overall healthy diet. Both diets are a good way to help gain or maintain healthy eating habits and are a much better guideline than any fad diet.
